The Word "Bible" Comes to us from the Greek via the Latin.
The Greek Expression is 'ta biblia'
meaning "the books". The
Bible may be described as the collection
of writings which the church has recognized
as inspired; this collection is also
often called the Holy Scriptures,
the Sacred Books and especially, the
Testament. Bible is not a book of
history, not a book of science but
it is a book of FAITH. The main content
of the bible is how God loved the
people and how the people responded
to Gods love. In short Bible is the
history of the salvation of mankind.
The Bible is the most widely distributed
book in the world. Both Hebrew Scripture
and the Christian Bible have been
translated more times and into more
languages more than 2,100 languages
in all than any other book.
It is said that more than five billion
copies of the Bible have been sold
since 1815, making it the best-selling
book of all-time.
The Bible is composed of two parts:
the Old Testament and the New Testament.
The Old Testament : The Old Testemnet
essentially describes how God loved
the people of Israel and how the people
responded to His call to love. The
Old Testament is the story of this
people in the light of the covenant.
God's purpose, the redemption of mankind,
was to be achieved by the sending
of His Son into the world, and the
coming of the Son of God naturally
marked a new era.
New Testament : God made another
and final covenant, sealed in the
blood of Christ. It tells about the
Messiah Jesus (several times, from
several viewpoints)how God loves us,
and then Paul's interpretation of
Jesus' life and mission and recommendations
for how all people should live according
to Christ. It finishes with the book
of Revelation encouraging the people
of God in their faith, at the time
of persecution and suffering through
symbols and signs which one can understand
in their time.
Each "Testament" is further
subdivided into individual "Books".
The Catholic canon of the Old Testament
has a number of books not found in
the Hebrew Bible and not regarded
by Protestants as Scripture. These
disputed books are: Tobit, Judith,
Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, 1 and 2 Maccabees
- together with parts of Esther and
Daniel(Esth. 10:4 - 16:24; Dan. 3:24
- 90; 13-14). These are named as "Deuterocanonical"
which means secondary. According to
catholic canon there are 46 books
(including the Deuterocanonical books)
in the Old testament and 27 in New
Testament.
